Lower electricity bills (from PLN 20 to around PLN 100 per month). Just change the tariff to a multi-zone target (from G11 to G12)

Maximum electricity price for households from July 1, 2024.

The government has introduced a maximum retail price for electricity for all households in the country from 1 July 2024. It depends on 50 gr / kWh net (62.12 gr / kWh with tax and VAT)and will remain in effect until the end of the year unless extended again.

With maximum price inclusion (uniform for all home buyers) two highest rates that have existed for the last year and a half disappear: 41 groszy for a consumption of 3,000 kWh per year and 69 groszy above this consumption.

Less than 3,000 kWh are consumed annually by 74% of households in Poland. So they will experience an increase in energy taxes from PLN 41 to PLN 50.

The remaining 26% of home users will see an increase in the consumption of the first 3,000 kWh of energy per year (by PLN 9), but at the same time there will be a significant reduction in energy purchase costs above this threshold (with PLN 19 or even more).

From 1 July 2024, also new electricity taxes

Along with the higher price, new tariffs for the sale of electricity to households came into effect. Base rates in the most popular G11 (24-hour) price have fallen to around PLN 0.63 net (over 40% less compared to tariffs from 2023, agreed at as much as PLN 1.06/kWh ).

The recipient of the G11 target (88% of households in Poland) will pay the highest price (50 groszy) in the second half of 2024, as it is lower than the agreed 24-hour fee.. We will pay the difference (PLN 13) to energy companies from our taxes. The level of electricity subsidies will be much lower than in 2023 (we paid PLN 43) and in the first half of 2024 (we paid PLN 33).

Multi-zone tariffs are worth paying attention to

It is worth looking at the prices in multi-zone tariffs, which are currently used by only 12% of home buyers in Poland, although they could be profitable for a much larger group.. We usually have such fees two (sometimes three) different electrical (and circuit) levels. Higher rates apply to peak energy demand in the country, while lower rates apply in the middle of the day and at night (eg G12, G12r) and on weekends (G12w).

The differences are related to both energy purchase prices and distribution services. In the G12 tariff, during daytime hours, electricity and distribution are about 15% more expensive than the 24-hour prices in the G11 tariff. However, at night (and in the middle of the day), electricity in the G12 tariff is already 30% cheaper, and distribution (all variable components) is 60% cheaper than the 24- hour.

All multi-zone energy sales targets, effective July 1, have also become cheaper. In some of them, cheaper hours are already priced below PLN 0.50, ie below the maximum price. In such a situation, recipients already pay the price that comes directly from the tax (ie de facto the market rate).

How much do “cheaper hours” cost in electricity bills?

For example, the cheapest hours from 1 July in the fee are:
PGE: 45 gr (G12) and 47 gr (G12w),
Tauron: 46 gr (G12, G12w),
Size: 41 gr (G12, G12p) and 42 gr (G12w),
Power: 47 gr (G12), 50 gr (G12w) or slightly less than 38 gr (G12r).

Electricity tariffs for households (types, indicators)

G11 – 24/7 (single zone) – one price for electricity 24 hours a day,
G12 – two-zone – one price for energy consumption during the day (day zone), and the second price for energy consumption at night (night zone).
G12w – two-zone (weekend) – two zones: day and night, with an extended night range to include Saturday and Sunday.
G12n – dual zone (Sunday) – htwo-zone group: day and night zones with an extended night zone on Sundays.

Billing details can be found in individual electricity suppliers’ tariffs. E.g PGE, Energy.

However, more expensive hours in these tariffs were approved by the regulator at a level of 70-80 gr / kWh, but politicians froze them at the same level as the G11 tariff, ie 50 gr / kWh.

As a result, home users in most multi-zone tariffs will pay the same amount for electricity during the day as in the 24-hour tariff: PLN 50. (and a few more to spread), and less at cheaper times (at night, in the middle of the day and on weekends): PLN 38-49, and they also save on distribution (about 60%).

The effect is that consumers do not have to change their energy consumption habits, and will still pay lower energy bills if they replace the G11 tariff with any other charge (eg G12, G12w or G12r).

Does it make sense to change the tariff without changing consumer behaviour, ie without shifting energy demand to cheaper hours?

If you take current prices into account, yes, definitely. Every year, a PGE customer who consumes 2,000 kWh/year could save over PLN 120 by changing the tariff from G11 to G12. If he changed from G11 to G12w (cheaper hours throughout the weekend), he would save almost PLN 200. However, an energy user who changes the tariff from G11 to G12r would get close to on PLN 270 per year.

Savings on changing the transmission depend on electricity consumption

The savings will be more visible in homes that consume a lot of electricity – says Bartłomiej Derski, an expert at WysokieNapiecie.pl, in an interview with MarketNews24. – In a typical Polish household, which consumes around 2,000 kWh, monthly savings amount to PLN 20-30.

With 5,000 kWh of consumption, the annual difference would be close to PLN 600, and with 10,000 kWh, the savings in Energa would already exceed PLN 1,700 per year.

For them it will not be profitable to change the tariff

Owners of photovoltaics in the settlement system valid until April 2022, i.e. the so-called old regulations (net-meter), should remember that by changing the tax from G11 to multi-zone, they will collect additional energy released to the grid in two (or three) different pockets (energy fed into the grid separately during peak and off-peak hours). For this group of recipients (almost 8% of recipients in G tariffs in Poland), it is very likely that a change in bill will not be profitable if they consume more energy in a cheaper zone and feeding it into the network in a more expensive one).

One tariff changes once a year

When considering changing the fee, however, we should remember that we can only make such a change once in a 12 month period.which may be even more important when energy prices are no longer frozen – comments by B.Derski from WysokieNapiecie.pl. – When this happens, we make a more conscious decision, for example, to wash the laundry on the weekend, because then we have cheaper electricity..
