Low water levels in German rivers threaten fuel supplies

The low water level in the German rivers Rhine, Main and Danube has begun to threaten fuel supplies – ships can no longer be loaded with the maximum amount, so the amount of transported fuel is significantly reduced.

While we have a moderately warm summer, the heat is unrelenting in Germany, there is little precipitation, but the water level in the rivers is decreasing. Since German rivers are an important link in the infrastructure for the delivery of various materials, including fuel, the recent situation has begun to affect gas stations as well.

What a Munich tankštelles the owner revealed to Focus that his gas station ran out of one type of fuel for this reason. “It’s a coincidence of several circumstances”, he complained – “Fuel could also be delivered by road, but there are not enough truck drivers. A classic lack of qualified workers, a classic lack of infrastructure”.

Deliveries by rail are not possible for his company, but deliveries by road transport have several interfering factors, such as drivers getting sick with Covid or the ban on driving on Sundays.

Whether the situation will worsen in the future is not clear, but it would be better for everyone if the rain did start to fall, writes Focus.
