Low Vaccination Coverage Among Older Adults Puts Health at Risk: ENSANUT Study

According to data published in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT), vaccination coverage has been a challenge in recent years, which has caused certain population groups, such as older adults, to be at risk suffering from conditions, disability and even death. from vaccine preventable diseases (VPD).

Total vaccination coverage in adults between 60 and 64 years only reaches 46.5% and 56% in the case of influenza vaccination in this population group. In addition to this, for adults aged 65 and over, coverage only reaches 44%.

For vaccine-preventable diseases, older adults show insufficient coverage. According to ENSANUT 2022, as of September 2021, only 48.8% of older adults received the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) vaccine, 24.4% the pneumococcal vaccine, and 49.1% the a ‘seasonal flu.

Given that older adults represent 9.2% of the country’s population and that adult vaccination coverage is lower than the best values for this sector, during this vaccination week the health and well-being of the entire population is important to reserve, including adults.

“Vaccination is essential in protecting the health of adults, so it should be considered an essential part of their lifestyle. It is essential that you consult your doctor to find out which vaccination schedules are recommended according to age in order to provide the best protection against preventable diseases. “Let’s not underestimate the power of vaccination in preserving our health and our lives so that we can have a better quality,” comments dr. Yolanda Cervantes, medical director of Vaccine Research, Clinical Development and Medical Affairs at GSK Mexico.

In Mexico, vaccination strategies in this group have included a risk focus on pregnant women, the childbearing age population, immunocompromised people and older adults, however, it is urgent to extend the focus of vaccination throughout life to protect against a greater number of diseases that are common in adulthood, such as herpes zoster, whooping cough, among others.

The figures underline the urgency of promoting greater awareness and access to vaccination among this vulnerable demographic. Vaccination not only reduces the risk of disease, but also strengthens our immune system against various conditions. With the proven benefits of vaccination, it is important to remember the importance of making informed decisions regarding our health.
