Low Uptake of IMSS Vaccines in Mexico: Abdala Vaccine Rejection and Public Health Concerns

Although there is availability of vaccines, the population entitled to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is not requesting its booster dose against Covid-19, which is reflected in the total number of doses applied against that disease and Influenza. reported Ruth Bruno Lechuga, coordinator of Public Health Nursing at the IMSS State of Mexico Poniente.

The above, presumably due to the population’s rejection of the Abdala vaccine, one of the five vaccines against Covid-19 developed in Cuba, this being the most effective (estimated at 93%).

In an interview with El Sol de Toluca, he said that until November 8, 129 thousand vaccines against Influenza had already been applied, while of the 64 thousand 300 vaccines available (initially) against Covid-19, only approximately 43 thousand had been applied. .

“The population is the one who decides whether or not to apply both vaccines, many (rightholders) do not accept that both vaccines are applied to them and decide to wait for up to a month, although we can apply them together or one first and the other later. week or the next day, for example, but for the most part people decide to return after receiving vaccines.

“In some other situations they mention to us that, according to all the vaccine news, the vaccine is not the one they expect, because they come asking for a specific vaccine, as we well know, within the entire population the most accepted was the Pfizer vaccine and knowing that it is different they doubt about its application, we offer it, but we cannot force the population to take it either,” he noted.

Ruth Bruno stressed that even when the population in vulnerable conditions is urged to get vaccinated, the biologicals against Covid-19 and Influenza are applied to anyone who requests them, even if they are not entitled.

In the case of the Covid-19 vaccine, it is applied to the general population from 5 years of age, while the Influenza vaccine is from 6 months of age.

Within the framework of the National Winter Vaccination Campaign 2023-2024, the Public Health Nursing coordinator of the IMSS State of Mexico Poniente recalled that vaccination against Covid-19 and Influenza is carried out on the same day, but if the beneficiaries and not beneficiaries request a deferred application is also done this way.

To conclude, he called on the general public to take advantage of the availability of the aforementioned vaccines, which after being applied could cause local pain at the application site, redness in the arm, swelling and sometimes fever, symptoms that do not cause no complications.
