Low Uptake of Covid-19 Booster Vaccines Among Elderly in Castilla y León Compared to Flu Vaccination Rates

Only two in ten people over 60 years of age in Castilla y León have chosen to receive the booster dose of the covid-19 vaccine that the Ministry of Health has administered since the beginning of October. A rate that contrasts with the fact that two thirds of the at-risk population have already been vaccinated against the flu, as reported yesterday by the general director of Public Health, Sonia Tamames. Thus, in the case of flu, 346,751 people have already been inoculated with the vaccine, that is, two thirds “of what will be the final coverage.” On this occasion, what is usual every year is reproduced, that “those over 75 years of age are vaccinated more importantly and as age decreases, so does the perception of risk.” Regarding the reception of the new risk groups, she assured that it will be known in the coming weeks when a more complete assessment is made.

Regarding covid, he pointed out that “something similar happens”, so as “age increases, so does coverage.” In this sense, he drew attention to the “current values, which are a little low for what we would like.” At this time, 20% of those over 60 years of age have been vaccinated. “We consider that more vaccination is necessary,” explained Tamames. These are figures in which the person responsible for public health invited the population that has it indicated, and that has not yet been vaccinated against both infections, to go to their health centers to do so, according to Ical.

All this during the presentation yesterday of the ‘One Health Castilla y León Objective’ project, which will consist of a website (https://onehealthcastillayleon.org/) with informative videos that this program aims to develop to publicize how this approach, which recognizes that the health of human beings, animals, plants and the environment are closely linked and interdependent, “marks the daily life of public health professionals and how it directly impacts the well-being of the citizens of Castilla y León.

Councilor Alejandro Vázquez pointed out that the website will have chapters recorded in the nine provinces of Castilla y León, with the aim of contributing to “awareness about the importance of proposing a roadmap that allows effective implementation” of the ‘One’ approach. Health’ (one health) when addressing relevant public health issues.
