Low-threshold Suicide Prevention Offers Supported by Bundestag Member in Freiburg Visit

On the occasion of a visit to the Arbeitskreis Leben (AKL) in Freiburg, Diana Stöcker (CDU), directly elected member of the Bundestag in the Lörrach-Müllheim constituency, emphasized her support for low-threshold suicide prevention offers. The life working group looks after clients from Freiburg, the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and from the districts of Ortenau and Lörrach.

In a conversation with Stefan Hannen (facility manager) and Sofie Seiferling (intern) it became clear that there is an exorbitant increase in the need for help. The development among young people, pupils and students who have needed help since the corona pandemic is particularly worrying. For example, there was an increase of more than 122 percent between 2020 and 2022 in the so-called first contact requests. The increase is also due to the fact that the offers of help are better known than before and luckily people are more likely to seek and accept help.

The AKL Freiburg offers a wide range of help for “clients”: looking together for alternatives to suicide, support in crises, advice for relatives and support for mourners after a suicide. With a few exceptions, all offers of help are free of charge.

Stöcker: “I am very impressed by the help offered by the AKL Freiburg. Help is given on the basis that crises are part of life for everyone. The aim is to keep the needy alive through a reliable, stable relationship. We have In our society there is an increasing need for low-threshold offers, so I am very grateful to the AKL Freiburg.”

An important offer is the [U25]-Mail counseling: An anonymous mail counseling that takes place as a peer-to-peer counseling (“Peer-to-peer advise those of the same age”) and is aimed at clients up to 25 years of age. Funding for this offer of help, which is being offered in many German cities nationwide, will expire at the end of 2024.

Stöcker: “There is a great need for help, especially for children and young people. I therefore support the AKL’s wish for further financing of the [U25]-Mail consultation beyond the year 2024. That’s why I wrote a letter to the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Paus, and made it clear that I was committed to continued funding.”
