Low Subscription Rate but High Monthly Pension Premium in Ulsan: Statistics and Rankings

The subscription rate for those aged 18 to 59 is 78.1%, 0.7 percentage points lower than the national rate.

Although the pension insurance subscription rate among people aged 18 to 59 in Ulsan is low, the average monthly pension premium was found to be the third highest in the country.

According to the ‘Comprehensive Pension Statistics’ recently announced by Statistics Korea, as of 2021, among the 676,000 people aged 18 to 59 in Ulsan, 520,008 people are subscribed to a pension (one or more of the national pension, occupational pension, retirement and personal pension). (78.1%), which was 0.7%p lower than the national average (78.8%).

It ranked 10th in subscription rate, 3.6% different from Sejong (81.7%), which was the highest among 17 cities and provinces nationwide. In addition, Ulsan’s pension subscription rate is increasing every year: 69.2% in 2016, 69.7% in 2017, 71.1% in 2018, 1.7% in 20197, 77.3% in 2020, and 78.1% in 2021.

Although the Ulsan region is showing an increase every year, it remains at the bottom of the nation. On the other hand, pension insurance premiums ranked among the top nationwide.

The average monthly pension insurance premium for pension subscribers in the Ulsan area was 347,000 won, the third highest among the 17 cities and provinces, following Sejong (455,000 won) and Seoul (353,000 won).

The average monthly pension premium for Ulsan pension subscribers was around 350,000 won in 2019, 344,000 won in 2020, and 347,000 won in 2021. Additionally, as of 2021, among 150,000 seniors aged 65 or older, 135,000 (90.3%) were pension recipients, which was 0.2 percentage points higher than the national average (90.1%). In addition, the average monthly benefit of pension subscribers aged 65 or older was 611,000 won, which was higher than the national average (600,000 won).

Next, the National Statistical Office also announced the results of a survey on pension subscription rates and average monthly pension premiums by household members rather than individuals.

In 2021, the number of households in Ulsan including people aged 18 to 59 was 359,000, of which 334,000 households were subscribed to the pension, with a subscription rate of 93.0%. The subscription rate per household was 93.6 out of 17 cities and provinces. %), the third highest after Sejong (93.4%).

In addition, the average monthly pension premium per household in Ulsan was 542,000 won, the third highest among the 17 cities and provinces, following Sejong (699,000 won) and Seoul (544,000 won).
