Low Language Culture: The Troubling Results of the Bulgarian Language Exam 2023

The red pen of the examiners is more than the blue of the higher education meads

An entire university is crying over this year’s graduate student essays. Disappointing results of the Bulgarian language exam at “Paisiy Hilendarski” PU confirmed what was also seen from the average result of the matriculation exam of 3.93 – ignorance of basic norms and low language culture of the graduating class of 2023.

Out of 957 candidates, more than half – 55.4% failed or barely made it to the top three. There are 278 broken, which makes 29.05 percent.

For the first time this year, the examiners wrote almost no sixes. Only 8 people have excellent and not one has 6.00. Knowledge of good 4 showed 143, which is 14.94 percent.

The most common grade is the four – 287 prospective students have this, that’s almost 30 percent. There is not a single job in which there is at least one task without an error. And the record holders have 61 mistakes in a text of 21 lines.

“Comments coming out of the entrance exam were that it was easier than the matriculation exam, but it too proved overwhelming for a huge number of candidates. It’s not because they underestimated him, but because they don’t even have basic knowledge, Assoc. Teofana Gaidarova is categorical, quoted by “Maritsa”.

Candidates-students have massively stumbled in the very first task, which requires them to rewrite a text, correcting spelling mistakes.

The red pen of the examiners is more than the blue pen of the candidates. It is not even necessary to comment, the facts speak for themselves,” says Prof. Gaidarova.

Instead of the word again in the exam papers it is written UDnewthe correct geographical has been fixed to geographical. The executioners are up smokingand the citadel – cathedral.

The words are not known. Complete lexical weakness. Vocabulary richness has been reduced to a minimum, summarizes the chairman of the examination committee.

And he gives more examples. Metropolises have become metropolitans and metropolisesand the sovereign – superstitious, sovereign and even souvenir. Swamp Islands are listed as swamps and Baltists.

The text was related to the history of Budapest, but apparently a large part of the test takers had not heard of this city. They wrote the name of the Hungarian capital in all possible ways: Budapest, Budapest, Budapest and Budapest. They turned the Habsburg dynasty into a dynasty of the Habsburgs.

All these mistakes show that there is no knowledge not only of the Bulgarian language, but also of geography and history, concludes Associate Professor Teofana Gaidarova. In the shameful annals of candidate student pearls, this year’s campaign adds one more – “university” which should be a university.

And the second task was not performed flawlessly by any candidate student. It wanted to rewrite a text, removing punctuation errors.

Closing commas are widely omitted in complex compound sentences. This year there is a new curiosity – the comma should be placed at the beginning of the line, and not at the end of the previous one. When transferring words, a hyphen is written on both lines.

This year, the examiners did not find a single text that could be published as an excellent paper in the university newspaper, as is the tradition in every admissions campaign. The student applicants had to compose a two-page text on the topic “Expectations can kill even the strongest man”.

They killed them, summarizes Prof. Teofana Gaidarova. The writings reveal that candidates cannot construct sentences and logically complete text. Everyone has tried to interpret the assignment in their own way. Fear of disappointment is often mentioned.

Worryingly, many of the texts advocate the position of living without expectations and going with the flow so that there are no regrets. There are no references either to literature or to politics and modern life.

The authors mainly revolve around the themes of love and friendship, where they expect dedication and are “stabbed in the back”. There is incorrect use of words and again very poor language, in places even inappropriate.

We are shocked from the results and performance of the candidates, and this is a fact with a fairly liberal grading scale, in which a couple is written for 22 mistakes in one task,” pointed out Prof. Gaidarova and added: “Despite these criteria and although the texts were not particularly difficult, we have failure of most candidates.

There is also a lack of common culture – you cannot have graduated from a Bulgarian school and not have heard of the Danube and Budapest – a world city not far from us. Surely these children have their strong points, but their education is not one of them, they have claims to become graduates”.
