Low Interest in Subsidized Electric Motorbikes in Jakarta Raises Concerns

Jakarta

Chief of Presidential Staff (KSP) Moeldoko admitted that he was surprised by the growth rate in sales of subsidized electric motorbikes of IDR 7 million. So far, the program seems to have few fans.

Of the total quota of 20,000 electric motorbikes in 2024, distribution has not yet reached 50% even though this year is about to end.

“Yes, it’s a bit strange, why is it a bit difficult for it to grow? It’s a bit strange, yes,” said Moeldoko when met at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Monday (6/11/2023).

On the other hand, Moeldoko said that the government itself had removed the strict requirements for subsidized electric motorbikes. However, until now distribution remains minimal.

As previously known, there are four requirements for getting an electric motorbike subsidy. Starting from KUR recipients, recipients of work wage assistance under IDR 3.5 million, electricity users under 900 VA, and recipients of social assistance (bansos).

After evaluation, the government decided to eliminate the above conditions. Now, 1 KTP can get 1 unit of electric motorbike with a subsidy of IDR 7 million.

“Requirements have been removed, actually. Maybe some of them are ecosystems that have not yet been massively developed, this is the same as chickens and eggs,” said Moeldoko.

When it was confirmed whether the IDR 7 million electric motorbike subsidy program would continue next year or not, Moeldoko said it would continue even though currently there was minimal interest. “Continue, continue,” he said simply.

Previously, the Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Association (AISMOLI) noted that up to now this subsidy program has only reached 8,000 registrants out of a total subsidy quota of 200,000 electric motorbikes.

Indeed, this number has increased, especially after the government expanded the scope of subsidy recipients in August 2023. Initially, before the expansion of subsidies there were only around 2,000 registrants for the IDR 7 million electric motorbike subsidy program.

However, when the subsidy coverage was expanded, there are now 8,000 registrants. This means that public interest is increasing, although it is still very far from the target.
