Low HPV Vaccination Rates in Groningen: GGD’s Efforts and the Impact of HPV on Health

In Groningen, approximately 20 percent of eligible young people have so far received an HPV vaccination. This means that the turnout is disappointing. The GGD will let you know this when asked.

“We recognize the national picture,” says GGD spokesperson Lily Benjamin. “At the moment, more than 20 percent have received a shot.” When asked whether the Groningen GGD finds this a disappointment, Benjamins says: “We offer the vaccination and we inform that this is possible. But it is up to the young people themselves to decide whether or not to use this. From the GGD, I think we have done a lot to draw attention to it. There was a national campaign, we held a campaign at the main station, and we were present at the KEI week. Letters have also been sent to young people who qualify for this.”

HPV
The HPV vaccination campaign focuses on young people between 19 and 27 years old. In the Netherlands, more than 1.3 million young people are eligible for the free double injection. The vaccination protects against serious forms of cancer. HPV stands for human papillomavirus. It is a virus that is sexually transmitted. This is a very contagious virus, which on average will infect eight out of ten people at some point in their lives. In most cases, the body can clear the virus itself. In 10 to 20 percent of cases, this is not possible, and HPV can cause cancer. In women it can lead to cervical cancer. Men can also get cancer, such as of the mouth, penis and anus. Every year, approximately 1,100 women and 400 men develop cancer due to HPV.

“After this year, the vaccination will cost money”
Benjamins: “The HPV injections are still being offered. It is good to say that it concerns two injections, with approximately 150 days between the injections. This is five months. The first injection can be received until the end of the year. The second injection can be obtained until June 1 at the latest. Afterwards it is also possible, but the vaccination costs money. You should then think of an amount between 300 and 400 euros. So our call is to just take advantage of it now.”

Osloweg
