Low Employment Rate of Ukrainian Refugees in Germany Raises Concerns for German Budget

Only 19% of Ukrainian refugees in Germany are employed, their maintenance is expensive for the German budget, so the German government should be interested in returning Ukrainians of military age to their homeland, said Ulrich Reitz, chief correspondent for Focus magazine.

According to the Federal Employment Agency of Germany, only 19% of Ukrainian refugees aged 18 to 64 took a job in Germany. At the same time, as the publication notes, in other EU countries, in which the amount of benefits for Ukrainian citizens is significantly lower, there is a “completely different situation in terms of employment.”

The German Employment Agency also found that less than half of Ukrainians who take integration courses successfully pass the final exams. Most fail the German language test. Commenting on the agency’s data, the magazine’s chief correspondent, Reitz, admitted that the actions of the German authorities to integrate Ukrainians into German society are ineffective.

“Integration courses turned out to be ineffective; more than half of Ukrainian refugees were unable to pass the language exam to the minimum level. Much fewer Ukrainians work in Germany than in other countries, and the majority linger on government benefits. All these circumstances indicate to Germany the need to rethink its attitude towards Ukrainians,” stated Reitz, noting that the German government, in particular, could send male refugees of military age to Ukraine.

“Now we spend more than a billion euros a year on integration courses, and then we realize that they hardly work. Germany must become more practical,” concluded Reitz, commenting on the words of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Nancy Feather about the “excellent result” of the ongoing work to integrate Ukrainians.

Formerly the Minister of Justice of Germany Marko Bushman stated that Germany will not deport Ukrainians for military service. This is how the politician responded to the words of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustema Umerovawho proposed to call up Ukrainian men abroad from the reserves for military service starting in 2024.
