Low educational level affects the health of Hispanics in NC

Raleigh.-A lower educational level has a negative impact on the health of Hispanics, since it limits their access to better medical care.

This is what the state Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) warns in the report.”Health Disparities in North Carolina 2024“.

But this report reveals that Latinos in the state are approximately two times less likely to complete a bachelor’s degree (a 4-year college degree) compared to non-Hispanic whites.

This affects them because achieving higher educational levels or specialized job training helps people have better access to good job opportunities and better health care, the department describes.

“(In addition), more educated people tend to know more about healthy behaviors, feel empowered to make informed decisions, and are more likely to develop healthy habits,” the report reads.

But Hispanics do not have access to these opportunities in part because of their low educational level and because the majority are undocumented, he mentions.

Mainly due to these factors, according to the report, 29% of Hispanics do not have health insurance and 18% said they had not gone to the doctor in the last 12 months due to lack of money.

Using data from 2021, the report also reveals that of the total Latinos aged 25 or older who live in the state, only 12.2% have a university degree.

This percentage is much lower than the 25% of Latinos who, according to the Pew Studies Center, have a college degree.

Furthermore, in the state, only 64.5% of Latinos in the state have completed high school when the total in all of North Carolina, including people of other ethnic groups and races, is 90%.
