Quoting from FOOD NDTV, according to recent research published in the journal Diabetes Care, low blood sugar can damage the heart.

Hypoglycemia is one of the most common and serious side effects of insulin therapy.

Kamlesh Khunti, a doctor from India conducted a study to determine the relationship between low blood sugar levels and heart disease.

He involved 3,260 people with type I diabetes and 10,422 people with type II diabetes.

Khunti explained that after hypoglycemia, diabetic patients treated with insulin had an approximately 60% higher risk of cardiovascular events and were twice as likely to die in the same period as patients who did not experience hypoglycemia.

“This is one of the first studies to report the risk of cardiovascular events and death in people with type I and type II diabetes,” Kamlesh said.

“The risk is very significant and we need to identify these patients early with the aim of implementing strategies to reduce their risk of hypoglycemia,” he added.

“Our knowledge is in those with type I diabetes,” said another researcher, Melanie Davies, University of Leicester.

Generally, diabetics are more susceptible to the risk of cardiovascular disease due to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the blood vessels.

according to experts, this study reflects the challenges faced by diabetics and could lead to changes towards better insulin management in patients.
