Low Blood Pressure, Is It Dangerous?

Many people worry about the condition of high blood pressure or hypertension. This is natural because high blood pressure has a high risk of causing a heart attack or stroke. But have you ever realized whether low blood pressure is also dangerous? If so why can it be dangerous? Here’s more information that we report from the page healthline.

Low directional pressure is also referred to by the term Hypotension. Have pressure blood lower is generally good in most cases (less than 120/80). But low blood pressure can sometimes make you feel tired or dizzy. In such cases, hypotension could be a sign of an underlying condition that must be treated.

Blood pressure is measured when your heart beats, and in the resting period between heartbeats. The measurement of your blood being pumped through your arteries when the heart’s ventricles squeeze is called systolic or systolic pressure. The measurement for the rest period is called the diastolic pressure, or diastolic.

Systole supplies blood to your body, and diastole supplies blood to your heart by filling the coronary arteries. Blood pressure is written with the systolic number above the diastolic number. Hypotension in adults is defined as a blood pressure of 90/60 or lower.

What causes Hypotension?

Everyone’s blood pressure drops from time to time, often causing no noticeable symptoms. Certain conditions can cause prolonged periods of hypotension which can be dangerous if left untreated. These conditions include:

  • pregnancy, due to the increased demand for blood from the mother and the growing fetus
  • large amount of blood loss due to injury

  • circulatory disorders caused by a heart attack or damaged heart valves

  • weakness and shock conditions that sometimes accompany dehydration

  • anaphylactic shock, a severe form of allergic reaction

  • bloodstream infection

  • endocrine disorders such as diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, and thyroid disease

  • Medications can also cause blood pressure to drop. Beta-blockers and nitroglycerin, which are used to treat heart disease, are common culprits. Diuretics, tricyclic antidepressants, and erectile dysfunction drugs can also cause hypotension

Some people have low blood pressure for unknown reasons. This form of hypotension, called chronic asymptomatic hypotension, is usually harmless.
