Love Amidst Chaos: The Wedding That Defied Earthquakes in Moroccan Village

The wedding of Habiba Ajdir (22 years old) and apple farmer Muhammad Boudad (30 years old) was scheduled to take place in his village of Katou on Saturday, and the bride’s family held the traditional wedding ceremony a day before, in accordance with customs and traditions.

Boudad said on Tuesday, while standing next to his wife while they were still wearing their wedding clothes, about 4 days after the earthquake that buried their belongings under the rubble, that the earthquake made him afraid for his wife while he was waiting for her in his village.

He added, “We wanted to celebrate. Then the earthquake happened. I didn’t know whether to worry about her village or my village.”

Residents said the poor village of Ajdir, Igil Ntilgomt, was reduced to rubble, and many of its residents were now homeless, but unlike other parts of the Adassil region, which is close to the epicenter, there were no deaths or serious injuries.

The earthquake was the deadliest in Morocco since 1960, after it killed more than 2,900 people, most of them in remote population centers in the High Atlas Mountains south of Marrakesh.

Only one person in Iguil Ntilgoumt, 8-year-old Ahmed Ait Ali Obla, was injured in the earthquake when a rock fell on his head and severely injured him.

Despite the disaster, Jadeer traveled to Katou on Saturday with Boudad’s brother and his wife, who were at the party.

The bride’s father, Muhammad Ajdir (54 years old), had set up a large tent in the courtyard of his house for the party’s guests, but this tent is now being used as a shelter for the villagers, although they say that they will soon need stronger shelters, with the weather expected to be colder later this week.
