The next of kin of a black woman who was shot dead at home by the police in the American city of Louisville at the beginning of this year will receive 12 million dollars (10.1 million euros). The mayor announced this on Tuesday. This settlement ends the family’s lawsuit.

26-year-old Breonna Taylor was hit by several police bullets on March 13, after armed officers entered her home without notice during a drug investigation at night. The healthcare provider died on the spot.
Three officers were involved in the night raid. One of them was fired in June for showing “extreme indifference to the value of human life” by firing the shots, according to police. The two other agents now perform administrative tasks.
Search warrants that do not require officers to announce themselves before entering have been banned by the city since Taylor’s death.
The deaths of Taylor and other black Americans faced with fatal police brutality sparked another major protests this year. In many countries, including the Netherlands, demonstrations were held against police violence and racism.
