Louise Erdrich’s New Novel: A Collage of Realism, Autofiction, and Fantasy Set in Post-George Floyd Minneapolis

Louise Erdrich’s new novel has a “collage” aspect. Not only because its chapters are cut into sequences, like so many more or less autonomous mini-stories. “La Sentence” mixes several disparate elements, combining realism, autofiction and pure fiction, shrouded in fantasy.

Set in Minneapolis in 2020, the work evokes the anger and anxieties created by the assassination of George Floyd and the Covid pandemic in the Native American community. Its main setting is an independent bookstore run by a certain Louise (the author herself is the owner of Birchbark Books in Minneapolis). As for its heroine, an employee of the bookseller, she has everything of a character in a story, struggling with her ghosts…
