Louis Vuitton Illusion High and Ankle Boots: The Ultimate Surreal Fashion Trend of 2023

The fashion world is bursting with bizarre shoes today. Think of the frog clogs from JW Anderson or the cartoon boots from MSCHF. Luxury brand Louis Vuitton is also jumping on the bandwagon. For 2,000 euros you can now parade with a set of new legs on your feet. Creepy or cool? The internet is not there yet.

This autumn, the greatest designers were inspired by surrealism, resulting in strange and absurd scenes. Clothing or footwear with an optical illusion are all the rage on the catwalks this year.

And now Louis Vuitton is also participating. The French fashion house debuted a set of unique pumps at their Fall/Winter 2023 collection show in Paris. And people on social media are loving it.

Made entirely by hand, in two skin tones

Meet the ‘Illusion High boot’, a knee-length boot in the shape of a stiletto with a sock and a leg. Specially designed to mimic the look and feel of a real leg with socks and pumps on. The surreal footwear is available in two skin tones — yes, that was thought about — and also comes as a shorter ankle boot.

Both boots are handmade from calf leather and hand-painted in Italy to create the most real trompe-l’oeil effect possible, according to the luxury brand’s website. In addition, each pair has a zipper at the back, a leather outsole and the LV initials engraved on it.

The price tag? A hefty 2,000 euros. But anyone who is considering getting such a special boot should act quickly, because the high boots in white skin color are already sold out. The ankle boots are still available on the site. Just like both boots in the dark skin color.

“Now I look like a doll”

She had to have such a bizarre fashion item, thought fashion influencer Isabelle Allain, better known as @izzipoopi to her 1.4 million followers. Yes, she ordered a pair of the very expensive designer boots. Although styling it proved to be a major challenge. “This is so fucking weird,” she says in her first video with 3.6 million views, as she looks at herself in the outfit and boots. “It’s almost creepy. My legs look like a doll.”

In a second video she tries the boots on under a black miniskirt. That turns out to be the winning combo. “This is the ultimate Polly Pocket shoe. So cool,” she responds. “I thought I was going to return these boots, but now I want to keep them forever.”

Many social media users don’t like the ‘trendy’ boots. “Ideal for when I wear a skirt but don’t want to shave my legs,” someone jokes. “You should have called them the ‘delusion boots’,” writes another. “This is proof that it doesn’t matter how ridiculous a product looks. If it comes from a luxury brand, people will buy it,” someone responded critically.
