The Louis Armstrong Center, which has just opened, is a kind of extension for the Louis Armstrong House Museum directly opposite – the star trumpeter’s last home in the Queens district, which has been preserved almost in its original condition. While visitors can only visit the comparatively modest house on a guided tour, the extension building, which costs around 23 million euros, has a permanent exhibition on Armstrong’s life and work, a concert hall and space for around 60,000 memorabilia from the musician’s archive.
Armstrong, who is considered one of the best trumpeters in jazz history with songs like “What a Wonderful World” and “Hello, Dolly”, was born in New Orleans and lived in the brick house in Queens from 1943 until the end of his life. Owned by the City of New York, it has been a museum since 2003 and has just been renovated.
