Loud Thunder Wakes Tri-State Area – NBC4 New York

More than one person woke up Monday to the sound of loud thunder as a warm front moved in bringing a line of thunderstorms that crossed our area from west to east.

Thunderstorms brought a morning of showers and lightning to New York City and other areas. According to reports, lightning struck the One World Trade Center.

But it was the thunder of 6:00 am that sounded in the city.

The Authority on Time noted that a warm inversion layer trapped the sound of thunder, essentially sending it back to the ground and creating a boom unique, larger than normal.

The storms were brief and cleared up after the morning drive. Conditions will not improve as gray skies with some areas of fog and drizzle are expected for the rest of the day.

By Tuesday, the sun will peek out with highs in the 60s. The rain will be back on Wednesday before we enjoy the best day of the week on Thursday with lots of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s.
