The governor of the city of Asadabad said a “terrible sound” was heard, but its origin was unclear, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. “Initially we thought the thunderstorm noise was due to weather conditions, but this possibility was ruled out,” the official said.

“The sound intensity in some places was so loud that doors and windows of houses shook and people left their homes,” news website Rokna said on its Telegram channel.
A video posted on Twitter showed an explosion that appeared to be from an anti-aircraft gun. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the footage.
Several similar incidents had occurred in recent months. Authorities said that Iran’s military held air defense drills unannounced amid rising tensions with Israel and the United States.

Tensions between Iran and arch-foe Israel have soared, while Tehran has held indirect talks with Washington to salvage Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
Israeli leaders have long threatened military action against Iran if they view diplomacy as a stalemate for denying Tehran’s nuclear arsenal. Meanwhile, Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
