All in all, the state-owned gaming company in Rhineland-Palatinate paid out around 200 million euros in winnings to players in 2023. That is almost half of its slightly higher turnover of around 418 million euros (plus 1.3 percent compared to 2022). Lotto Rhineland-Palatinate announced this on Thursday at the annual press conference, along with an annual surplus of 691,000 euros.
Investment in collection points across the country
Around 50 cents of every euro wagered on the lottery goes to the winners, and 34 percent flows into the state budget through taxes and duties (2023: around 150 million euros). “We are doing a lot of good for the state in this way, for example by employing teachers and police officers,” said State Secretary Stephan Weinberg, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lotto Rhineland-Palatinate. Player and youth protection is a high priority for the company, which operates 900 sales outlets across the state. Lotto Managing Director Jürgen Häfner emphasized the company’s social commitment. Social projects, environmental protection, culture and sport were again strongly supported in 2023. “There is no social group missing that is making a contribution to the common good in Rhineland-Palatinate,” said Häfner.
Lottery outlets are intended to revitalize villages
The infrastructure in rural areas with village centers, for example, from which many small shops have disappeared or are in danger of disappearing, is also important to his company, said Häfner. Lotto acceptance points contribute to the revitalization of village centers in the rural state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said the managing director. This is also why “we want to further strengthen the lottery acceptance points in addition to sales via the Internet,” said the Lotto boss. Lotto Rhineland-Palatinate is one of 16 lottery companies in the state-run German Lotto and Toto Block, which nationwide generated 8.2 billion euros in stakes in 2023.
