Lottery almost maintained 2019 record high

At the end of a year in which it has shown resilience, the Lottery is proposing to increase its subsidies to good causes by 15 million euros.

The health crisis has prevented the National Lottery from achieving another record year after its very good 2019 vintage, but the public company managed to limit the decline to a small 6 million euros to complete 2020 with 1.436 billion euros in turnover.

“Our strategy of focusing on the diversity of our games, our players and our channels has made us less vulnerable to them external factors …”

Jannie Haek

CEO, National Lottery

At the worst moments of the first lockdown, it had more than 2,000 outlets forced to close. Its leaders believe that it has lost up to 35 million euros in income, before compensate almost all of this amount during the second half through organic growth.

“Our strategy, focused on the diversity of our games, our players and our channels, has made us less vulnerable to external factors, which explains our resilience”, underlined the CEO of the National Lottery Jannie Haek when presenting the results.

Differences between products

The results differ greatly from one product to another. Sales grew 1% in gaming Lotto, to 444 million euros, where the increase in the chances of winning introduced in 2018 continues to generate good results.

EuroMillions has had a difficult year for two reasons: a lower than normal jackpot offer and the fact that, for a few months, Spain withdrew from the game (lockdown). Here, the Lottery saw its turnover decrease by 11.7%, to 496 million.

+23,1%

In revenue, the Lottery digital network increased its share by 23.1% in 2020.

In the scratch tickets, on the other hand, it recorded an increase of 15%, to 392 million euros. True to its policy, the Lottery has not communicated anything, finally, on its offer of sport bets Scooore. It should be noted that it intends to spin off this activity this year, in particular for governance reasons (unlike lotteries, betting-type games of chance come under the control of the Gaming Commission).

Redistribute 15 million more

On the side of distribution channels, the Lottery saw its digital network jump 23.1% to absorb 332.5 million in turnover. At the expense of retail network, which has drained “only” 1.084 billion in revenue, a decline of 6%. As he has often been asked the question, Jannie Haek made it clear that “no, digital did not really take advantage of the lockdown to take off”. It has also been growing faster than retail every year for a while.

The number of winners increased (94.1 million winners), as did the rate of redistribution of earnings, at 57% against 54.5% in 2019. The average gain was 8.7 euros.

And if the monopoly rent remains fixed at 135 million euros, the Lottery is proposing to the government to increase the share allocated to good causes of 15 million euros to bring it to 200 millions. One way to share the resilience of results with the whole of society in these difficult times.
