The rules of car insurance are clear: only those who are also specified in the contract are allowed to drive a car. This can be done by name or by family affiliation, e.g. B. the adult child. A larger group of drivers can also be entered – for example, anyone over 23 years of age.
The problem: This has a financial impact, because the more people drive the car, the more expensive car insurance usually becomes. Because this statistically increases the risk of accidents. Any group of drivers makes car insurance more expensive on average by 195 percent.
“If the group of drivers changes, for example if novice drivers are included in their parents’ car insurance, it is worth comparing providers,” says Dr. Rainer Klipp, Managing Director of Motor Insurance at Check24. “Because the surcharges then due differ significantly between the individual insurers. Often the previous insurer is no longer the cheapest choice.”
If someone causes an accident and is not registered in the vehicle insurance, the owner’s statutory liability insurance still applies.
Still, it can get expensive. In the event of incorrect information, the motor insurer will recalculate the premium for the insurance year in question and ask for the difference. Depending on the insurer, additional contractual penalties may apply – e.g. B. in the amount of an annual fee. The person at the wheel can also take recourse against the insurance, in the event of gross negligence or willful misconduct, even for the full amount of the damage.
However, emergencies are always excluded, including, for example, circulatory problems on the motorway. However, inability to drive due to alcohol is not considered an emergency.
“If, for example, you want another person to take the wheel when you go on vacation, it is worth checking with your motor vehicle insurance company,” says Dr. Rainer Klipp. “With some providers it is possible to insure additional drivers for a few days free of charge or for a small fee.”
