1. Union promises security

Philip Eppelsheim

Editor in politics of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

CDU and CSU have decided on their joint program for the federal election. The green soaring has stopped, said CSU boss Markus Söder.

The program: In the 140-page program, the CDU and CSU promise to keep Germany stable and reform it at the same time. The Union excludes tax increases. It wants to create opportunities for economic growth by reducing bureaucracy. In terms of climate policy, the Union has announced that Germany should become a “climate-neutral industrialized country” by 2045. The CDU and CSU want to return to a budget without new debts as soon as possible. A “generation pension” for old-age provision from birth is called a building block. In foreign policy, the election manifesto promises the introduction of a National Security Council in the Chancellery to coordinate foreign and security policy. Germany must act strategically in foreign policy.

Biggest challenge: The Union sees China as “the greatest foreign and security policy challenge”. It is important “where it is necessary” to counter China’s will to power in close coordination with our transatlantic partners and other like-minded democracies with strength and unity. This is especially the case with the protection of intellectual property, “our high technology and our data, so that we do not get into dangerous dependencies”. On the other hand, however, “where it is possible”, cooperation with China should also be sought, whereby fair competition must be ensured. Regarding Russia, it says in the program that it “challenges our values”. NATO must counter this threat with “credible deterrence”.

The green: CSU boss Markus Söder said: “The green soaring, the approach of invincibility is at least over.” That is due to “the very good performance of our Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet”, the unity of the Union and the mistakes of the Greens . He is convinced: “The Germans do not trust the Greens to take over the Chancellery.” Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock described the Union’s program as “unhappy” and complained about a lack of concepts for climate protection and social cohesion.

2. Open schools have priority

According to the federal government, however, the development cannot be completely foreseen. According to a study, distance learning has hardly any learning effect. The Leopoldina sees enormous burdens for children.
