‘Lost’ David Bowie album from 2001 is officially released

Appears on November 26 Toy, a ‘new’ album from David Bowie. The album consists for the most part of songs from the period 1964-71 that Bowie re-recorded in 2001.

“I’m so looking forward to sitting in a claustrophobic room with seven other energetic people and singing my heart out,” David Bowie wrote in his tour diary in 2000 – even better in English: “sing till my tits drop off’ -. Bowie did just that in 2001 with producer Mark Plati and band members Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer, Emm Gryner, Lisa Germano, Gerry Leonard and Cuong Vu. Bowie wanted to evoke a live feeling in the studio and collect the best takes on an album.

That became the album Toy, on which David Bowie alternates new songs with re-recordings of lesser-known songs from the period from 1964-71. Due to struggles with his label EMI, the album was canceled to Bowie’s great disappointment. Some recordings did appear as B-sides on singles and on compilation albums, but Toy, as Bowie originally envisioned, won’t be out until this fall. A version of the album was already leaked on illegal download sites in 2011.

If you want to physically own the album, you must immediately purchase a full box set for it. Toy appears as part of David Bowie 5: Brilliant adventure (1992-2001), that also remasters of Black tie white noise, The Buddha of suburbia, Outside, earthling, hours, the live album BBC Radio Theatre, London, June 27 2000 and the compilation album Re:Call 5 will contain.

Then on January 7th will appear Toy:Box, which will also feature b-sides and remixes. Physically it will consist of three CDs or six vinyl records.
