Lost boy (16) rescued from gorge thanks to his fascination with stones | Abroad

The mentally retarded boy, who cannot speak, got into an argument with his mother and sister during a walk and started to run. He got lost and was off the radar for more than six hours when rescue services launched a massive operation.

The rescue crew spoke to the mother, who talked about his fascination with stones. “He is always fascinated by it, it continues to occupy him.” Hours later, when a rescuer heard a repeated tapping of rocks in the woods, he immediately thought of what the mother had said.

“I heard the sound of two stones being knocked together, followed by an echo. I immediately knew it had to be the boy,” said Steve Goldsworthy of the rescue team. Because the boy was difficult to reach, a helicopter had to be called in to determine that he was indeed in the ravine.

The boy was sitting under a tree on a steep slope nearly three miles from where he was last seen. Rescuers descended with ropes to get him out of the ravine. He has been reunited with his family without injury.
