Zeeland fishermen this week found a golden earring that another fisherman lost at sea 23 years ago. “It’s unbelievable,” says the owner of the found earring NH News.
Henk Kuiper bought the earring in 1985. The fishing cutter WR70 can be seen inside the jewellery. The gold earring is an age-old tradition among Dutch fishermen. Often a ship or other maritime image can be seen on such an earring.
Around the year 2000, the fisherman from Den Oever lost his earring at sea while fishing for sole on the same WR70. “I went looking on the deck and at home, but if he is in the sea you will never find him again,” Kuiper told the broadcaster.

The day before yesterday, a trainee on the Zeeland fishing cutter YE-118 saw something glittering on the boat after fishing. He soon saw that it must be an earring from another fisherman who had come with the catch. “The WR and the 7 were still visible,” says skipper Robbert Mol. He decided to share the piece of jewelry on Facebook.
Kuiper saw the photo pass by, but a light did not immediately go on. “It seemed familiar to me, but my head was somewhere else for a while. A few hours later my brother sent a message with: ‘that’s your earring’.”

Kuiper was able to collect the piece of jewelery from the Zeeland fishermen in Den Helder yesterday. Although he is very happy to have his earring back, the piece also reminds of a violent event on the WR70. “We sank with that at Terschelling. It still gives me chills.” All crew members survived the November 4, 1987 event.
The fisherman will no longer wear the earring, but will frame it. “I’m afraid I’ll lose him again.”
