Loss of right-wing party FPÖ heavier than expected in Wee …

In the state elections in Vienna, the right-wing FPÖ has, according to the final results, performed even worse than the initial forecasts. The legal populists appear to lose 23.7 percentage points on Wednesday, to 7.1 percent.

The other representative of the far right, ex-FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache, also suffered a heavy defeat last Sunday. With his list, Team HC Strache, he achieved 3.3 percent and thus does not get past the electoral threshold.

After counting more than 300,000 correspondence votes, the conservative ÖVP appears to have reached 20.4 percent, an increase of 11.2 percentage points. The Greens achieved their best result ever with 14.8 percent, an increase of 3 percentage points. The winner of the election is Mayor Michael Ludwig’s SPÖ, which comes out at 41.6 percent.

When looking for a coalition partner, Ludwig can also count on the liberal Neos, which achieved 7.5 percent (+1.3 percentage point). Vienna has been ruled by a red-green coalition since 2010. The Austrian capital is a city and a state at the same time.
