LONDON, COMPASS.TV– Application company ride-hailing Uber, will appoint 70,000 drivers in the UK as permanent employees. So, they will get guaranteed minimum wages, insurance, holidays, and pensions.

The move was taken by Uber after losing to the British Supreme Court. In the trial last February, Uber stated that the driver is a partner, not a worker.

But the Supreme Court ruled that the driver was not an independent partner, but a worker. Because their activities are determined and controlled very tightly by Uber. So they are entitled to a minimum wage, days off and a pension.

Now, Uber’s management says, the national minimum wage to be paid to drivers is £ 8.72 or the equivalent of IDR 174,400 per hour (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 20,000). Salaries are paid to drivers who are over 25 years old and take effect today (17/03/2021).

Uber will also provide free health insurance and be enrolled in the pension program.
Uber’s Regional General Manager for Northern Europe, Jamie Heywood, said other ride-hailing companies could follow Uber’s steps to benefit its drivers.

“Uber has consistently told us they want flexibility but also they want benefits and we have struggled to find a way to bring the two together in a way that works for us and for the driver,” Jamie was quoted as saying. BBC.
