Los Pumas 7s Make History with Third Gold Medal and Second Place Finish in World Rugby Sevens Series

The Argentine Sevens team, Los Pumas 7s, continue to make history. At the close of the 2022/23 season, they became champions in the Sevens in London, the last stage of the World Tour, thus achieving the third gold medal in this competition and finishing in second place in the general table, behind the champion New Zealand. In addition, in the penultimate stage (Seven de Toulouse), he was left with a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The process headed by Santiago Gómez Cora is an example of long-term work and he demonstrated it with the results obtained in recent times. After the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this season the journey of Los Pumas 7s through the 11 chapters left different historical marks.
The national team became champion for the first time in history in the London Sevens, beating Fiji (double Olympic champion) 35-14 in the final. This gold medal conquest is the third in the WRSS and the sixth medal of the season, the highest harvest since the creation of the world circuit at the end of 1999.
That of the Pumas 7s is a memorable campaign, the best of all time. At the mythical Twickenham Stadium (England), he defeated the Fijians twice, scoring a total of 75 points; even, in the qualifying stage, he equaled the record as the most comfortable success in history, with a difference of 28 goals.

With the gold added in London, the Argentine team finished in second place in the world ranking, with 179 points, achieving the best position in history. The season champions were New Zealand, who lost to Samoa 19-24 in the bronze medal match in London.
In the English capital, the Argentine national team added their sixth medal of the season, something unprecedented in the history of Los Pumas 7s since their best previous performances were:

In 2021/2022: one gold medal (Vancouver), one silver (Málaga) and three bronze (Dubai 1, Dubai 2 and Seville).

In 2003/2004: one gold medal (Los Angeles), two Silver (Hong Kong and Singapore) and two bronze (Dubai and London).

The six medals this season are summarized in: three golds, in three different continents (Hamilton, New Zealand; Vancouver, Canada and London, England) and three silver medals (Los Angeles, Singapore and Toulouse).

THE ROAD TO GOLD FOR THE PUMAS 7S IN THE LONDON SEVEN

In the group stage (Group B) they beat Japan (43-12) and Fiji (40-12) and lost to Ireland (12-14).
In the gold quarter-finals, they defeated Ireland 28-14; in the semifinals they beat Samoa 10-7 and in the final they beat Fiji 35-14.
