Portugal’s TAP Air Portugal Expands US Reach with New Flights
Portuguese flag carrier TAP Air Portugal is set to significantly expand its footprint in the United States, launching three new routes connecting Portugal to major American cities next summer.
Highlighting the growing demand for transatlantic travel, TAP will launch nonstop service from Lisbon to Los Angeles on May 16, 2025. The route will initially operate three times per week before increasing to four weekly flights on May 25 using Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. This new connection answers the call of over 71,500 passengers annually who flew between these two cities during 2023 using connecting flights, making it the largest unserved market between Portugal and the U.S.
The airline also plans to bolster existing routes. Starting May 14, travelers will be able to fly via direct flights between Porto and Boston, operating four times per week using A321LRs. Additionally, TAP will offer weekly flights between Terceira Island in the Azores and San Francisco starting June 3, utilizing A330-900neos.
“Constantly evaluating destinations” in North America has always been on TAP’s agenda, according to Henri-Charles Ozarovsky, Head of Strategy who spoke to Aviation Week in September.
These new routes come as TAP enjoys notable success in the transatlantic market. During the peak summer of 2024, the airline provided approximately 43,200 two-way weekly seats between Portugal and North America, a substantial increase of 41% compared to summer 2019.
Looking forward, TAP is celebrating its 80th anniversary of service in 2025, the same year that Los Angeles becomes its eighth U.S. destination, joining existing hubs like Boston, Chicago, Miami, Newark, New York JFK, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles. Travelers can anticipate further expansion, with cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston, and Vancouver attracting considerable passenger interest.
While TAP is growing its North American network, several other destinations including Mexico City are also ripe for exploration as the airline continues to connect these regions.
