Los Angeles police are getting rid of recently purchased BMW i3 electric cars

In the period from 2016 to 2018 Los Angeles police bought a hundred “BMW i3 “electric cars, but now – in a couple of years – decided to get rid of them completely. It turned out that the electric car with a range of 130 kilometers is not suitable for the police service, and now these vehicles are sold at half price.

The decision to purchase electric cars, which can travel a relatively short distance without recharging the batteries, has proved to be wrong in practice. Most of the BMW i3s purchased were not used for police patrols at all, but were mainly used for private business. Not only was the delivery of the electric car unsatisfactory, but also the very high cost of the project – a total of USD 10 million (EUR 8.4 million), which also included the construction of several charging stations. As a result, the Los Angeles Police Department decided to return these electric cars to a BMW dealer.

BMW dealerships in the United States now sell these i3 electric cars at a quick liquidity price of 10 to 20 thousand dollars (eight to 17 thousand euros). In addition, these police BMW i3 currently do not exceed an average of a few thousand kilometers, while some of them have not traveled even a thousand kilometers. These electric cars still have a valid manufacturer’s warranty. For comparison, a new BMW i3s with an eight-year warranty in the US costs 44 thousand dollars (37 thousand euros).

The electric BMW i3 debuted in 2013. Despite the fact that the car has been in production for seven years, the demand for it is stable and in 2019 even increased. During these years, BMW has sold 150 thousand “i3” electric cars.
