Four years after the United States led a boycott of the Olympics in Moscow, the country hosted the Games for the third time, the second in Los Angeles. However, only 14 nations led by the Soviet Union did not send delegations. In the end, this edition had the largest participation: 6,829 athletes from 140 countries.

Brazil had their best performance in Olympic history so far. With 151 athletes (129 men and 22 women), the delegation returned home with eight medals: 1 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze.
The sea bream was won by long-distance runner Joaquim Cruz in the 800 m sprint, with the right to the world record for the race (1min43s), which lasted until the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The men’s soccer and volleyball teams won their first Olympic silver medals. The others in silver were Torben Grael and Daniel Adler in sailing (soling class), swimmer Ricardo Prado in the 400 m and light heavyweight judoka Douglas Vieira. The two bronzes were won by judo players Walter Carmona (medium) and Luís Onmura (light). Ricardo Prado was fourth in the 200m backstroke.

For the first and only time in Olympic history, a winner of final B had a better time than the gold winner of final A. German Thomas Fahrner broke the Olympic record of 400 m freestyle with 3min50s91, compared to 3min51s23 for the American George DiCarlo. Fahrner also won a silver in the 200m freestyle and a bronze in the 4 × 200m freestyle.
