Los Angeles: More than 10,000 homes and businesses destroyed, at least 11 dead (Video) –

The fire fronts continue to rage in the Los Angeles for another 24 hours, with the destruction so far being enormous, while according to the latest information, the dead amount to 11.

Of the at least six fires that continue to burn in Los Angeles, two stand out for their sheer size.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, yesterday demanded an “independent and full review” of the city’s water distribution services. He criticized in particular the shortages in the supply of water in the midst of fires, especially in the first hours and days. “We need answers”, to “find out exactly what happened”, he said in an open letter.

Fire Chief Christine Crowley, for her part, told KTTV, part of Fox News’ national network, that her department is facing shortages of “personnel, resources and funds,” accusing the township of ” abandoned” the firefighters.

Maps and images reveal the scale of the fire’s destruction

Firefighters are battling to control massive wildfires in Los Angeles that have killed at least 11 people, burned thousands of buildings and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes.

It is a rapidly changing situation, as can be seen from the maps and images presented by the BBC which show the scale of the devastation, as well as where the fires are and the devastation they have caused.

The largest fire in the Pacific Palisades area is the most destructive fire in the history of Los Angeles. Nearly 20,000 acres have now burned.

Placing the affected area on maps of New York and London gives a sense of how large it is, stretching from Clapham to Greenwich in the UK capital, or across large areas of lower Manhattan and Queens.

Where are the Los Angeles fires burning?

Five wildfires are currently burning in the Los Angeles area.

Palisades Fire: Largest active fire burning between Santa Monica and Malibu. Area burned: 20,438 acres. More than 5,300 structures were destroyed. At least 30,000 people were evacuated.

Eaton Fire: Second largest wildfire burning north of Pasadena. Area burned: 13,956 acres. Probably more than 4,000 structures were damaged or destroyed. Five deaths were reported.

Kenneth Fire: In the West Hills area, just north of the Palisades. It started Thursday afternoon and has so far burned 1,000 acres.

Hurst Fire: Northeast of town. Area burned: 771 acres.

Lidia Fire: Reported in the hills north of Los Angeles. Area burned: 395 acres.

However, three fires have been contained.

Woodley Fire: A small fire was reported at a local park. Area burned: 30 acres.

Olivas fire: A small fire was first reported in Ventura County about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. Area burned: 11 acres.

Fire at Sunset: Reported in the Hollywood Hills Historic District near several famous landmarks, including the Hollywood sign. Area burned: 43 acres.

The largest fires have burned thousands of buildings

Officials say more than 10,000 buildings have been destroyed by the two largest fires – about 5,000 each in the Palisades and Eaton fires.

As the maps below show, the fires are burning largely unpopulated areas, but have spread into residential areas and many more buildings could be at risk depending on how the fiery inferno spreads.

Among the buildings already destroyed in the Palisades fire are many of the luxury properties located on the Malibu waterfront.

A combination of an exceptionally dry season – downtown Los Angeles has received only 0.4cm of rain since October – and strong offshore gusts known as Santa Ana winds have created critical conditions for wildfires.

Santa Ana winds flow from east to west through the mountains of southern California, according to the National Weather Service.

Blowing into the deserts further inland, they create conditions where moisture falls, which dries out the vegetation. If a fire starts, winds can amplify a smoldering fire into an inferno within minutes.
