Violent Attacks on LA Metro Buses Prompt Increased Security Measures
Recent violent attacks and robberies on Los Angeles Metro buses are prompting additional security measures from the transit authority and police. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of both bus drivers and passengers.
Incidents of Violence
In the last two weeks, two stabbings, an assault, and a series of robberies have been reported on LA Metro buses, highlighting the need for improved safety measures. One incident recorded an audio of a bus driver being berated, punched, and stabbed by an attacker.
Law enforcement is currently searching for the attacker. It’s a reminder of how dangerous the job of a bus driver can be when they are confronted with such acts of violence.
In another incident, a man got aggressive and attacked a bus driver who refused to let him aboard an out-of-service bus in Santa Monica. The authorities are currently working on identifying and making an arrest in this case.
Responding to the Attacks
“Disgusting is the word I use. And now, it’s getting worse everywhere,” said John M. Ellis, General Chairman of SMART Union, which represents 4,500 Metro bus operators and 500 train operators. The attacks have raised serious concerns among the transit workforce.
The Metro Board Chair and LA Mayor, Karen Bass, released a statement through her press secretary, highlighting the transit company’s response to the incidents. Metro has already increased safety precautions, with an enhanced presence of transit security officers and reinforced barriers to protect the operators.
Efforts to Curb Violence
Deputy Chief of Transit Services for LAPD, Don Graham, acknowledged the recent uptick in violent incidents but also emphasized that violent crime on transit has decreased by 41% in the past year. Additionally, 30 LAPD officers have been deployed on the buses of the most prone lines.
Graham believes that stronger prosecution could serve as a deterrent to such violence. Even though acts like spitting on or throwing liquid at drivers may not be considered highly violent crimes, transit police, in collaboration with the district attorney’s office, is working on creating stricter prosecution for offenders.
