The tragicomedy “Parasite” by director Bong Joon Ho has made Oscar history: For the first time in the history of the Oscars, a non-English-language film won in the most important category “Best Film”. They were the first ever Oscars to win South Korean production.

“After winning the best foreign film, I thought we could relax now. Thank you for the award. When I was young and studied film, one sentence imprinted on my heart: The most personal is the most creative,” said Regiseeur Bon Joon Ho.

The British war drama “1917” by director Sam Mendes was actually a big favorite. At the end of the evening, “1917” came up with three gold statues: for the best camera, best sound mixing and best visual effects. The peculiarity of the film is that it looks as if it was shot in a single shot.

Comic film adaptation with the best protagonist

The awards for the actors, however, were not surprising. Renée Zellweger won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Judy Garland in the film biography “Judy”. “Last year we were able to celebrate Judy Garland across genders, generations and cultures. This reminds us that our role models unite us,” said Zellweger.

Joaquin Phoenix was recognized as the best actor. He plays a mentally disturbed man in the cartoon adaptation “Joker”. He made a thoughtful speech and argued for more justice: “When we talk about inequality, racism, gay rights, rights of indigenous people or animals, it is mostly in connection with the term injustice. We often talk about the fight against the belief that one Race, gender, species have the right to dominate, control and exploit others with impunity. “

“The Irishman” goes empty-handed

The ceremony was particularly disappointing for the Netflix production “The Irishman” by director Martin Scorsese. She was nominated for ten Oscars, but went away empty-handed. The Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” – also nominated ten times – received at least two awards. For Brad Pitt, among others, as the best supporting actor.

For the second time in a row, the Oscars 2020 got by without a moderator. The show did well because it gained pace. In addition to pop legend Elton John, the rapper Eminem also impressed with a surprise performance.

One of the main criticisms of the Oscars remains this year: the prizes were won mainly by white men. The academy tried to cheat here with lots of music and comedians who were allowed to make fun of the lack of diversity.
