Los Angeles County will align with the state of California and Eliminate requirement for attendees to show proof of COVID vaccination or negative test result when attending large indoor events, such as sporting events or concerts, health officials said.

According to the county Public Health Department, that requirement will be lifted on April 1 along with the statewhich will also remove that command.

The move follows the lifting of other COVID restrictions, such as indoor mask-wearing requirements, in response to declining numbers of infections and hospitalizations.

But county health officials continued to urge precautionary measures against the spread of the virus, noting that the BA.2 subvariant of COVID-19 is slowly beginning to spread locally and will likely gain a stronger foothold in the county. , mirroring the pattern seen abroad and in some cities on the East Coast.

During the week ending February 26, 6.4% of all COVID samples that were tested for variants turned out to be of the BA.2 variant, which is a more infectious branch of the Omicron variant that fueled the recent winter spike in infections. That was a 4.5% increase from the previous week.

Health officials noted Monday that while the percentage is still low, the same pattern was seen with the Omicron and Delta variants that became major spreaders of the coronavirus earlier.

BA.2 is currently estimated to be responsible for 23% of cases sequenced nationally, while accounting for 30% of infections in New York City.
