In September, Brooks took preventative legal action against the woman living there in the US state of Mississippi. He accuses her of attempted blackmail and defamation, among other things. She demanded millions from him so that she wouldn’t file a lawsuit in return.
In the complaint, the woman describes repeated sexual assaults. She also makes it clear that she was dependent on work due to financial difficulties. In a statement, attorney Douglas H. Wigdor praised his client’s “courage” in filing a lawsuit against Brooks.
In a statement on Thursday (local time), Brooks said that over the past two months he had been targeted with threats and lies about what his future would be if he did not pay hush money. If he had accepted these demands, he would have been admitting to behavior of which he was incapable – “ugly acts that no human being should ever do to another.”
Brooks became known in the 90s for his mix of country music with pop and rock sounds. His successful albums include “Ropin’ The Wind” and “The Chase”. The multiple award-winning musician is one of the most successful US artists. The father of three has been married to his country music colleague Trisha Yearwood for the second time since 2005.
