Founded in the mid-1970s in Iztapalapa, where a large part of the capital’s workforce is concentrated, Los Ángeles Azules perform tonight at Ángel de la Independencia to greet 2022 and welcome 2023. With this they consecrate their popularity with the public, the reasons for which are varied.
One in four inhabitants of Mexico City lives in Iztapalapa, one of the most popular mayors of the national capital and where, every weekend, there are streets closed with neighborhood vehicles to have their block party.
The Blue Angels started from the bottom. His initial idea was to get money to help his parents, who made a living by washing for others and driving public transport. In fact, his first instruments were purchased thanks to a guarantee obtained.
They started out at block parties and with no musical education. They played “by hearsay” and having learned from other musicians they had met along the way, a story which had begun to spread around the area and they had hit it off.
Elías Mejía always carried pen and paper with him, because creativity would arrive at any moment and he had to capture it in the form of verses or ideas that would then take shape. And with their savings they recorded a record that reached a broadcaster and he, in turn, invited them to make a record in his studio.
His songs, Mexican party classics
In 1993, while they were studying because they didn’t think of music as their only lifestyle, they recorded “Entrega de amor” which history marks as their first great success, which was followed by “How I’m going to forget you”, which for two decades he has been part of parties all over the world.
In 2013, when their image risked remaining in a 90s band, they received an invitation to perform at Vive Latino, which they didn’t want to participate in because they thought their music wasn’t for the event, but they accepted and were a success because everyone in the audience knew their songs. They released an album with songs revisited, with the participation of Jay de la Cueva, Ximena Sariñana and Saúl Hernández, among others, which was an overwhelming success.
