Los Angeles approves mandatory COVID vaccination for adolescents 12 years and older

In the US state of California, the Los Angeles Board of Education voted to mandate COVID-19 vaccination for students 12 years of age and older seeking to attend face-to-face classes.

Until now, the Los Angeles Unified School District, which enrolls more than 600,000 children, mostly Hispanics, has tested all students and staff for the coronavirus every week, demanded the wearing of masks indoors and outdoors, and called for teachers to be vaccinated.

According to the new decision, students 12 and older who play sports and other extracurricular activities must receive two COVID vaccinations by the end of October, and others by December 19.

“This action is not about violating anyone’s rights. This action is about making us work to ensure that children can go to school and be safe in public schools,” said Los Angeles School District Board Member Monica Garcia.

Parents’ views on the district’s decision were divided.
