Lörrach, Rheinfelden: A 98 between Lörrach-Ost and Rheinfelden-Mitte will probably remain closed until mid-October – traffic from the direction of Weil must be diverted via the B 316 and Degerfelden

The A 98, which has been closed since Wednesday afternoon between the Lörrach-Ost and Rheinfelden-Mitte junctions, is expected to remain closed in the direction of Rheinfelden until mid-October. The reason for this is the subsidence of the ground under the western abutments of the two superstructures of the Dultenaugrabenbrücke, reports the Freiburg Regional Council (RP).

According to the RP, the first noticeable subsidence was determined a long time ago. This prompted the road construction authority to commission a rehabilitation of the so-called embankment cone (the embankment fill under the bridge’s abutments). During the execution of this work, the subsidence would have accelerated unexpectedly, so that the construction site was temporarily closed on Wednesday.

A panel of experts made up of civil engineers and geologists, convened at short notice, determined the next steps on Thursday. In a first step, two measuring systems working independently of one another were installed, which can record deformations and subsidence every quarter of an hour. One of these systems is used by the technical relief organization (local group Opfingen near Tübingen). The further work steps for the next few weeks and the entire renovation should then be determined on the basis of the measurement results.

Until the first stabilization is achieved, traffic from the direction of Weil must be diverted via the B 316 and Degerfelden. A transfer of traffic to the second Dultenaugrabenbrücke (opposite lane) is not possible, since no additional loads should be applied here, according to the RP.

The regional council asks road users and especially residents in Degerfelden to understand the necessary closure.
