Loreto: power outages cause riots in the city of Iquitos

The constant power outages suffered by the city of Iquitos have caused tension in the population. Above all, workers from the civil construction union who have confronted members of the National Police of Peru in a protest that took place on the morning of Thursday, April 18.

The mobilization of residents and workers from the civil construction union that took to the various streets in protest against the constant cuts that began peacefully, however, turned violent after PNP troops tried to disperse the march.

As a result of the confrontation, several people have been affected by tear gas, stones and pellets. Likewise, the students of the Augusto Freyre school had to be evacuated, which was affected by the bombs dropped by police officers.

The cause of the protests is the untimely power outages by the Electro Oriente company that have affected the population and various industries, including the construction sector.
