Lorenzo Sonego expects Medvedev to lead after Federer’s withdrawal, Nadal

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has one of the most unique games on the Tour, and his hitting efficiency is on par with the best players in the game. In the last two seasons, he has managed to achieve successful results against the big three.

Daniil Medvedev was recently praised by rising Italian tennis star Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian player hopes the new world No. 2 will keep moving up in the game. He also felt the Russian star has the ability to take the sport forward after the current trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic pull out of the game.

The 25-year-old revealed his admiration for Daniil and declared: “I would say Medvedev: he has already surpassed Federer and Nadal, among the new players he is without a doubt the strongest and the most continuous”

At the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season in Miami, the big three were absent, and it was after many years that all three were absent from a particular event.

Sonego compared the situation to that of a child who has the entire house empty for them.

The Turin-born professional athlete added: “Freaks don’t miss a tournament, so not having them around is a huge relief.

A bit like when as a child you can have your house free to celebrate “Medvedev lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in Miami At this year’s Miami Open, the absence of the big three paved the way for the youngsters on the Tour to make the most of the opportunity .

However, Daniil was unable to capitalize and seize his opportunity as he lost to Bautista Agut. The final was played between two young men, Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz, with the latter ending up winning his first Masters 1000 title.

Medvedev started the season on a positive note, being runner-up at the 2021 Australian Open. He moved up the rankings and surpassed Thiem and Nadal to become the second best player in the world.

Later, he competed at the Miami Open but lost in the quarterfinals. He is scheduled to play his first clay-court match in Monte Carlo this week.
