L’Oréal erases the terms “white”, “whitening” and “clear” from its skin creams: the announcement

“The group L’Oreal has decided to withdraw the words white / whitening (white / whitening), clear (fair / fairness, light / lightening) from all products designed to make the skin uniform “. It is the announcement of the French cosmetic giant L’Oreal, which has decided to eliminate from the descriptions on the containers of its products some terms that can be associated with racism.

There are no other details, for example on the possibility of an immediate withdrawal from the trade of the products already on sale. The decision comes in the wake of the wave of protests in recent weeks over the killing of George Floyd and follows that of the Indian branch of the Unilever group which has chosen to rename its skin whitening cream marketed under the name of “Fair & Lovely”. The brand has promised to stop using the word “fair” as it declares “committed to celebrating all skin tones“.

L’Oreal then tweeted that “it is in solidarity with the black community and against injustice of any kind. It’s worth talking about. ” The post, however, sparked a negative reaction from people who see the company’s business model and advertising focused on white consumers. The English model Munroe Bergdorf he particularly accused the beauty brand of hypocrisy for firing her three years ago for denouncing “racial violence of whites“.

we need you.

In these pandemic weeks, we journalists, if we do our job conscientiously, carry out a public service. This is also why every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it we are proud to offer hundreds of new contents for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, interviews with experts, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost. Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues. Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, fundamental for our work.
