López Obrador denies having expropriated the area that Calica exploited in QR

There is no expropriation of the material banks exploited by the mining giant Vulcan Materials on the coast of Quintana Roo, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The decision made regarding the Felipe Carrillo Puerto industrial estate, which was published on Monday in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) –which includes the site–, It is a declaration of a protected natural area, because there is no way we are not going to protect our natural resourceshe emphasized.

When asked about the position of the US company regarding the declaration – accusing expropriation–, the president insisted that it is a defense of the national territory in one of the areas more beautiful of Mexico and the world, the coasts of Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Maya.

With an area of ​​more than 53 thousand hectares, the federal administration decreed the creation of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto protected natural area, which includes the land of 2 thousand 387 hectares of the Sac-Tun mine (formerly Calica), which was exploited by the Alabama-based company.

The decree in DOF indicates that the area with a flora and fauna protection category is located in the municipalities of Solidaridad, Tulum and Cozumel.

In a statement, the company announced a day later that it will legally challenge the decision of the López Obrador government.

The head of the Mexican Executive disqualified the company’s position and reiterated that an agreement was sought with its directors.

Pending claim

Given the threat of the powerful US company to challenge the federal resolution, the president asked to find out who its lawyers are.

In that sense, and because Vulcan has sought and has the support of various sectors of Washington – which have even threatened to take the case to disputes within the T-MEC – the President questioned.

Because they talk about defending the environment, avoiding climate change, and look what they do, a materials bank to take gravel to the United States.

To support his claims, he asked his team of collaborators to show a video that shows the environmental devastation of the area where the mine was installed.

Some time ago, the company filed an arbitration before the court of the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes, based in Washington, in which it claims 1.9 billion dollars from Mexico for the closure of the mine that occurred several years ago. months.
