The “Watching husband Stone” standing in Hongmei Valley, Sha Tin, is a famous landmark in Hong Kong, attracting many people to come here. However, the Wangfu Stone has been standing for a hundred years, and it will inevitably be worn out. Recently, a citizen was hiking and saw that the “head” of the child next to the mother’s back seemed to have disappeared strangely, worrying whether it had broken due to weathering. The stone has folk tragic stories about the separation of husband and wife. When she came back, she didn’t know that her husband had already died in a shipwreck in the sea, and then the three mothers and children disappeared. It is said that God felt her perseverance and turned them into rocks, so that the souls of the couple and children could be reunited. In terms of geology, this stone was originally a huge boulder, and its joint planes formed upright stone pillars and stone blocks due to the weathering process, which are called “protruding stones”.
There are many similar rocky natural landscapes all over the world, but some of them are no match for the baptism of nature and gradually become disappearing landscapes. For example, the Twelve Apostles in Australia have only eight pieces left after strong wind and wave erosion; Taiwan Queen Yehliu’s head is also facing a “neck-breaking crisis” due to weathering. As for the Wangfu Stone in Hong Kong, which has survived more than a hundred years of wind and frost, although it is still in good condition, people graffiti on the stone from time to time.
