How easy do you find it to eat ‘healthy’? In a world where mainly unhealthy food is promoted? You probably run into this too! Dutch health funds have been concerned for years about the dominant role of unhealthy food in our daily lives. Time to wake up the Netherlands!
In the three-part documentary series ‘Looking for healthy’ Dutch celebrities Renze Klamer, Hanna Verboom and Fidan Ekiz explain the truth about how we Dutch eat and drink. Politicians, advertisers, supermarkets, consumers and food manufacturers are also confronted with the all-encompassing question: “How is it possible that healthy eating is so difficult?”
Powerless against the food industry
Healthy eating seems important to the majority of the Netherlands. Yet the number of people who are overweight or obese is high, which has major consequences for public health and the future of children. ‘Consumers want to eat healthy, but seem powerless against the food industry.’ Unhealthy food and drinks are now mainly promoted.
The ambition of AVGG (Alliance for Healthy Generation) is that by 2040 Dutch youth will be the healthiest in the world. A fairly ambitious mission, but certainly feasible as long as there is more awareness. Hence the urgent call from the Alliance: make healthy eating and drinking easy! The three-part documentation series was commissioned by the Alliance for the Healthy Generation. The four initiators are: Diabetes Fund, the Heart Foundation, the Stomach Liver Intestine Foundation and the Kidney Foundation. More information about the documentary or campaign can be found at www.opzoeknaargezond.nl.
Diene Halbertsma, chairman of AVGG says: “Consumers feel that they decide for themselves what they eat, but the availability of unhealthy food is so dominant that there is no fair choice. We are constantly tempted to make unhealthy choices, which makes it very difficult to eat and drink healthily. That is why we are sounding the alarm now. We want that there a package of legal measures will provide a healthier range of food and drinks: including a ban on children’s marketing for unhealthy food and no VAT on fruit and vegetables. We are literally eating ourselves sick right now. The consequences are enormous; a tsunami of people with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney damage and digestive diseases is coming our way.”
‘Looking for healthy’
Unfortunately, the main target group for unhealthy advertisements is children. That is why the Alliance for the Healthy Generation believes that it is high time that consumers know what’s going on. In the documentary ‘in search of healthy’ you will find out why healthy eating is so difficult. A selection of the questions asked by celebrities: ‘Why is healthy food more expensive than unhealthy food?’ ‘Why are the vast majority of advertisements my child sees for unhealthy food and drinks?’ And ‘why is there more choice for unhealthy than healthy?’ The online documentary series ‘Looking for Healthy’ can be viewed via www.opzoeknaargezond.nl
