Doctors have been trying to find a substitute for our blood for over 400 years. But to this day, the elixir of life has proven to be difficult to replace. Even for the most important function of the blood, oxygen transport, it has so far only been possible to find a replacement to a limited extent. In the meantime, however, new possibilities of bio- and nanotechnology are awakening new hope to find a replacement for the globally scarce donor blood.
