After the merger of the two football clubs in the city of Salzburg in February, a new home is being sought for the new, larger team. A plant in Salzburg-Liefering would be desirable. The sporting goals are ambitious: the highest domestic league.

In February this year, the American football clubs Salzburg Ducks and Salzburg Bulls merged – and now compete as the Salzburg Ducks or the “Salzburg Football Team” in the second-highest division of the Austrian Football League. But the ambitions of the new Salzburg Ducks are great: The club wants to follow up on the glorious days of American football in Salzburg – in 1984 and 1989 they even brought Austrian championship titles to Salzburg. But that includes first of all being promoted to the highest league and then of course a central, Bundesliga-compatible home ground.
Because currently the Ducks with the combat team, the women’s team and four junior teams – all together more than 300 people – are distributed over four sports facilities in the city of Salzburg: for example the sports center Mitte in Salzburg-Nonntal, the Austria-Salzburg-Platz in Salzburg- Maxglan and the “Ducks-Field” at Baron-Schwarz-Park in Salzburg-Schallmoos. That is an enormous organizational effort, says Ducks chairwoman Christine Gappmayer.

For Gappmayer, the big goal is a central home for the footballers at the panorama sports center in Salzburg-Liefering. There were certainly signals of support during a first round of talks with the city and state of Salzburg. But this is about a lot of money – according to the Salzburg Vice Mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ), who is responsible for sports, it is “not an easy lifting exercise”.
The urgently needed artificial turf field alone should hardly be available for less than half a million euros, says Auinger. But if you can divide the sports facility concept over several years and set up special funding – then the plan is quite feasible.
